I Hear the Beat of the Drums

Dress: Goodwill ($5), Tube-top: GW ($1), Shoes: Forever 21/GW ($3), Bag: GW ($3), Earrings: GW ($2), Necklace: GW ($1)

TOTAL: $15

I feel very tribal in this dress, almost like I should don a turban and start carrying water on my head.  Of course, that reference might work a little better if a) my skin were not quite so obviously deprived of vitamin D, and b) if I weren’t wearing such tall shoes that carrying water on my head would be a danger to myself and anyone else within a five-foot radius.

So, I guess I won’t be busting out my water-pitcher or my bongo drums anytime soon.  Which is a real bummer since a bongo-playing, water-pitcher balancing act would be sure to get me some serious pocket-change on the streets.

Another dream dashed in the dust.

Ugly Duckling’s Revenge

Top: Old Navy/Goodwill ($3), Skirt: American Eagle/GW ($4), Belt: Capezio/GW ($1), Shoes: Forever 21/GW ($3), Earrings: GW ($2), Necklace: GW ($1), Bracelet: Made by moi

TOTAL: $14

I feel like if The Ugly Duckling were a ballet (who knows? maybe it is; after all, there’s Black Swan, Swan Lake…there certainly seems to be a precedent for it), my shirt would make a good wardrobe choice for whoever plays the duckling POST-swan transformation.

I seriously had to resist the urge to stretch my neck really long and honk while wearing it.  But resist I did.  I wore this to church, and I just don’t think it would have been appropriate in that setting.

I’ll have to remember to wear it to the park next time.

All Banged Up

Top: American Eagle/Goodwill ($3), Shorts: Old Navy/GW ($3), Belt: Capezio/GW ($1), Sandals: Birkenstocks/GW ($3), Bag: A gift from my mama form Italy

TOTAL: $10

I’ve wanted bangs for a while now.  Which is ironic since, as a child, my mom always “recommended” them (read: cut them for me), and I thought they were super-dorky and promised myself that, once I was in full control of my hair’s destiny, I would never have bangs.

Turns out, moms really do know best.  When I marched up to my stylist and said, “Gimme Anne Hathaway’s bangs from The Devil Wears Prada,” she didn’t say a word about straight bangs on a curly head (does anyone else suddenly have the urge to sing, “Fat man in a little coat?”). She just took one look at my high forehead and started snipping.

I’m loving them right now.  And you know what the best part is? Come closer. It’s a secret: hair grows…and bobby pins are a girl’s best friend.

So whenever I decide to reintroduce my pasty forehead to the world, I can.  Just like that.

Feel the power.

P.S. My husband heartily approved of this ensemble (or at least he did before I added the loud belt and shoes, but I didn’t ask after that).

Just Can’t Win For Losin’

Top: Goodwill ($3), Jeans: Seven for All Mankind/GW ($5), Shoes: Old Navy/GW ($3), Belt: GW ($1), Necklace: local thrift-store ($4), Earrings: GW ($2), Purse: GW ($3)

Polish: Jaded by Revlon

TOTAL: $20

My husband and I differ greatly in our style aesthetics. I do believe that nothing would make him happier than if I wore solid slim-fitting tees and a matching flowy skirt or jeans every single day. He has great taste, and he’s really sweet about it, but it’s a little…constricting for me—Miss How-much-color-and-pattern-can-I-combine-in-one-outfit-before-your-eyes-bleed.

So I’m determined to get better about putting together looks that we both like.

And I really thought I’d scored with this one.

Fitted: check.

Muted colors: check (okay, not the belt…or the purse, but I just couldn’t help myself)

The cute little vintage grape-cluster necklace I know he likes: check.

But when I went to the door of his office all proud of myself and struck a “tada” pose, and he just smiled at me kindly but vaguely, I knew I’d failed miserably.

Again.

Good thing I like a challenge.

How about you? What do the people closest to you think of your style?
